Our Story

 

For more than twenty years, nursing was not just my profession—it was my identity.

I was a Registered Nurse.

A leader.

A steady presence in complex, high-pressure environments.

Someone others relied on during life’s most vulnerable moments.

I was competent, trusted, and accomplished.

And yet—over time—I became discontent.

Not because nursing failed me, but because I began to outgrow the version of myself I had become inside it.

When Success No Longer Feels Satisfying

Discontent does not always arrive as burnout. Sometimes it arrives quietly—disguised as restlessness, detachment, or the persistent feeling that something meaningful is missing.

That was my experience.

On the outside, my career reflected success. On the inside, I felt increasingly disconnected from my own sense of purpose. The systems, constraints, and expectations that once energized me began to feel limiting. I found myself asking difficult questions I had avoided for years:

Why does doing everything “right” feel so wrong?

When did confidence become obligation instead of choice?

Who am I if I am no longer this role?

These questions marked the beginning of what I now call The Confidence Shift.

The Mask of Professional Confidence

Nursing leadership trains you to be composed, decisive, and resilient—often at the expense of your own emotional truth. Over time, I learned how to perform confidence exceptionally well. I knew how to lead, manage crises, and carry responsibility without hesitation.

But beneath that professional confidence, my personal confidence was eroding.

I was no longer energized by the work. I was maintaining, not thriving. I was functioning, not fulfilled.

What I came to understand is this:

Discontent is not a weakness—it is information.

And ignoring it only delays alignment.

Choosing Awareness Over Avoidance

My transition did not happen abruptly. It began with awareness.

I started noticing the same pattern in others—high-achieving professionals, caregivers, leaders—people who were capable, intelligent, and deeply committed, yet quietly dissatisfied with lives that looked successful from the outside.

I recognized myself in them.

The more I listened, the clearer it became: confidence is not built by enduring what no longer fits. It is built by honoring the truth of what we need next.

That realization required courage—not to leave nursing, but to tell myself the truth about how I felt inside it.

From Nursing Leadership to Life Coaching

Leaving nursing was not a rejection of my past—it was a reclamation of my future.

Nursing taught me how to assess, support, and stabilize. Life coaching allows me to guide people through reflection, clarity, and intentional change. Where nursing often required me to work within rigid systems, coaching invites people to design lives aligned with their values.

The work felt expansive where nursing had begun to feel constricting.

And in that space, my confidence returned—not as certainty, but as self-trust.

What I Learned About Confidence

Confidence is not the absence of doubt.

It is the willingness to listen to discomfort.

It is the courage to evolve without vilifying where you came from.

True confidence is saying:

This chapter mattered.

And I am allowed to turn the page.

The Confidence Shift is about that moment—when external success no longer compensates for internal misalignment, and you choose to honor what your discontent is trying to teach you.

Why I Chose Life Coaching

I chose life coaching because I wanted to work upstream—before discontent becomes despair, before burnout becomes illness, before people abandon themselves to remain acceptable.

I chose it because transformation does not come from fixing what is broken, but from trusting what is true.

And I chose it because my own confidence could no longer be rooted in endurance—it needed to be rooted in authenticity.

Erika Burnham is the Owner of E.V.O.L.V.E. 4 You LLC, a Life Coach, and a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of experience across progressive nursing leadership, hospice, home care, ICU, emergency services, medical-surgical, and critical care. Throughout her career, Erika has witnessed life at its most fragile-and its most transformative. But her story is not just one of service; it is one of courage. Erika has repeatedly answered the call to evolve-shifting roles, redefining success, and choosing growth even when it required letting go of what was familiar. In addition to her roles as a Life Coach and a Registered Nurse, she is a poet, songwriter, Death Doula, Certified Dementia Practitioner, keynote speaker and author.
